I love Andrew Sullivan's blog, but I completely agree: his thinking turns to mush as soon as he begins talking about his faith. He starts using all sorts of nonsense phrases that resonate with other believers, but mean nothing when looked up in the dictionary. For example:
For me, the unique human capacity to somehow rise above such suffering, while experiencing it as vividly as any animal, is evidence of God's love for us (and the divine spark within us)
What does that even mean? I can guess that "rising above suffering" means, in some sense, accepting it and continuing to grow - but how is that evidence for God? It's just nonsense words.
I'm sure that Sullivan has read Orwell's "Politics and the English Language," but he just has a permanent blindspot here.
